Tips for Preventing Razor Burn

Shaving is a fact of life. Although more of a chore than a pleasantry it has to be done on a regular basis. Anyone who has been shaving for a while has probably experienced razor burn. That bleeding, painful sensation you get that leaves your skin red and burning sometimes for several days. Here are ten tips for preventing razor burn.

1. Never shave dry skin.
2. Use a lotion or shaving cream, usually after a shower or bath.
3. Make sure the razor you use has a sharp blade.
4. Use disposable razors.
5. Try not to shave the same spot over and over.
6. Shave in the direction of the hair growth for best results.
7. Use the razor lightly against the skin.
8. Apply moisturizer to your skin after shaving.
9. Use an electric razor for a smooth and even result.
10. Avoid using soap and water, as it will only dry your skin.

The skin irritation caused by razor burn is a direct result of peeling off part of the top layer of your skin. If you notice redness after shaving, don’t worry – it’s normal. However, we all know that razor burn is very hard to get rid of because every time you shave, you irritate your skin.

While some experts would tell you to stop shaving, it is certainly not an option many would consider. You can reduce the redness by applying hydrocortisone to the area after you shave. Hydrocortisone will temporarily relieve some of the pain and irritation, however, those in the know warn not to use it too often. They feel that over-use of hydrocortisone can cause a rebound effect where you may experience additional irritation and redness.

With so many products available today, there are safe and effective methods you can use to prevent razor burn. While some prefer shaving cream, others may use a different approach. Whatever method you choose in preventing razor burn, any one of the ten tips should help.

What Exactly Are Carbohydrates?

We’ve all heard the term low-carb diets, bad carbs, good carbs, and the like. But what exactly are carbohydrates? Let’s break them down into a more palpable and easy to understand format.

Foods containing carbohydrates encompass sugars, starches, and cellulose. When eating candy or any sugary foods, carbohydrates are then broken down in order for them to become blood sugar.

Carbohydrates come in two forms: simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates consist of a bar of chocolate, for example. Once eaten, and because they are processed much faster in your system, you develop a sugar high, right? But then after awhile, that high wears off and you seem to crave more food.

Conversely, complex carbohydrates consist of foods that are high in fiber and contain starch. Most of these carbohydrates are processed slower than the simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates consist of beans, fruits, whole grains, vegetables, and potatoes, among others.

These complex carbohydrates are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. You never feel hungry afterwards, due to the fact these foods are more slowly absorbed than their counterpart.

Now, here is the key component in choosing either simple or complex carbohydrates. Once either of these carbs is consumed, one of two things can occur. Either you exercise, in which case the fat produced from the carbohydrates is dissipated, or you do nothing, which would then allow the fat to build up. Thus, the diets which have become so popular in reducing carbs play a significant role.

It all boils down to this: carbohydrates and sugars are synonymous. The trick is to discern which foods are digested slower than those which are not. If you are trying to decide whether or not to go on a low-carb diet; research the appropriate foods and exercise that will ensure the efficacy of this specific diet plan.

4. Do not treat a sore at home, as it may lead to a serious infection.

Unfortunately, diabetes affects vital parts of the body, including the feet. In order to alleviate any future problems, diabetics can protect their feet by being vigilant and aware of the conditions which may occur.

Tips for Do It Yourself Facial Hair Removal

For some women, having facial hair is a fact of life which, unfortunately, we cannot avoid. Those little tiny, dark, hairs seem to crop up in places you’d least expect. The problem is most of the time you can’t even see them. To alleviate the pain of have them professionally removed, here are some tips for do it yourself facial hair removal.

While most of us use tweezers to remove facial hair around the eyebrows, some use this implement to remove hairs on the upper lip and under the chin as well. Painful? Yes. But the hairs grow back more slowly because you are plucking out the root as well.

If your hair is dark in nature, and you would rather not use tweezers, an excellent method is to use crème bleach. This lightens excess dark hair and lasts quite a long time. In fact, it is a great alternative to plucking a sensitive face.

Another method commonly used is waxing. While it is a bit painful, it is an effective way to remove hairs from the upper lip and/or facial area. The wax kits available today can be purchased for home use; and it should be noted, that most home kits use cold wax to prevent burning.

A more popular way of removing hair is by using sugar waxing. The difference between a sugar wax and a regular wax is that the sugar is water-soluble therefore hairs are removed easier by simply using water. This is a good thing.

Whether you pluck, bleach, or wax, removing facial hair is a necessary evil. Be sure to use the best method your type of skin, sensitivity, and facial hair. Either way, while it has to be done, the process should be as painless as possible.

The Link Between Tanning and Skin Cancer

The link between tanning and skin cancer is well known. Skin cancer is caused by sunburn, which is inflammation of the skin and the tissues beneath it caused by overexposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun. These ultraviolet rays, when exposed over a long term, can cause basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. However, the most serious of all skin cancers is malignant melanoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer. The cells just below the surface of the skin become cancerous and a tumor develops. Due to long-term exposure to sunlight, an ulcer may form and destroy the tissue.

Squamous cell carcinoma causes the underlying skin cells to become damaged and this leads to the development of a life-threatening tumor or lump. Unlike basal cell carcinoma, where there is no spreading of the tumor, the squamous cell carcinoma can spread throughout the entire body.

Malignant melanoma is the most serious of all types of skin cancer. This type of melanoma metastasizes throughout the body.

So too, there is a misnomer to think that cloud overage or wintry days will keep your skin safe from the UV rays that are ever present. To prevent any of these types of skin cancers to develop, it is important to use SPF 15 or higher when out in the sun. In addition, wear light protective clothing when exposed to the sun for long periods of time.

Always check your body for any unusual moles or firm, fleshy, hard-surfaced lumps which seem to grow at a steady rate. The basal cell carcinoma will appear as a small, flesh colored lump, usually on the face, next to the eye, or on the side of the nose. The squamous cell will particularly show itself on that part of the skin which is constantly exposed to sunlight. The malignant melanoma may appear on any skin surface as a flat spot or bump accompanied by black or brown pigment.

While we know that direct sunlight is a major cause of skin cancer, there is another link to skin cancer as well. The use of tanning beds causes as much malignant melanoma as sunlight. Moreover, the UVA light used in sun beds can be responsible for all types of cancer.

While you can develop sunburn without sitting under the sun, the ultraviolet rays can still penetrate your skin. So too, if you are on the water or sand, the sun’s rays reflect off those surfaces and burn parts of your skin that you think are protected.

If you notice anything out of the ordinary on your skin, see your doctor to determine what it is by having a biopsy done to ascertain if it falls under any of the above categories. There is a link between tanning and skin cancer and the more you are aware, the better chance you will have of recognizing the signs of skin cancer before it can spread.

Take Control Of Depression Without Medication

Depression is an insidious disease and is one that is difficult to diagnose and treat in some cases. While most doctors would prescribe a plethora of medications, you can take control of depression without medication.

St. John’s Wort contains chemical components which, according to recent studies, might work by preventing nerve cells in the brain from absorbing the chemical serotonin, and reduce levels of protein in the body’s immune system. In simple language, it is thought to be an effective medication to treat mild to moderate depression.

However, it must be noted that St. John’s Wort is still undergoing studies to determine its efficacy in treating severe depression. Moreover, St. John’s Wort should not be taken with other drugs wherein the interaction between the drugs can cause harmful results.

The statistics on depression reveal there are approximately 19 million Americans who suffer from this medical condition. While there are many people who are taking anti-depressive drugs, there are those who prefer not to take medication at all. There are a variety of remedies which one can use to alleviate depression, as long as it is mild to moderate in severity.

Breathing exercises have an enormous therapeutic value in treating depression. So too, yoga and other forms of meditation can alleviate many of the symptoms associated with depression.

Other natural remedies can be found in diets which contain omega-3 oils, folic acid, magnesium, and vitamin B6. In addition, the discontinued use of alcohol and caffeine as well as reducing the amount of sweets consumed can also reduce the effects of depression.

Exercise is also a great way in which to minimize depression. Establish a routine such as walking 20 to 30 minutes daily. Utilize aerobic exercise which naturally increases chemicals in the brain known to enhance one’s mood and at the same time decrease the stress hormones.

Take Care of Your Feet

How many times have you uttered, “Oh, my aching feet?” When exercising, your feet really take a pounding. Many injuries to the feet are a result of not wearing proper running or walking shoes while exercising. It’s important to take care of your feet especially when working out. Here are some of these tips to help you avoid foot pain.

Feet need to be washed every day, especially between the toes where fungus can develop. Washing feet daily helps to remove dead skin and bacteria. While there are many who think that soaking tired and achy feet in Epsom salt is the cure-all, the fact is it can leave your feet dry. Use dishwashing liquid instead, as this will not only soothe but soften your feet, as well.

When exercising, it is important to wear appropriate running or walking shoes. In fact, experts relate that running shoes should be thrown away after 200 miles of use. Not wearing the proper shoe can result in calluses, ingrown nails, infections, and runner’s toe.

One of the most painful injuries to the foot is the heel spur. This can result from wearing worn-out shoes when exercising. Experts also suggest that walking or jumping on hard surfaces can cause heel spurs. Unfortunately, the only treatment for this injury is a series of injections.

According to the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, the most common pain associated with jogging is runner’s knee, which is caused by rolling in or down on the foot. Moreover, rising on the toes can cause injury to the Achilles tendon, especially during aerobic exercises.

If one can’t walk, one becomes debilitated. Therefore, it is essential that you do everything you can to take care of your feet. This includes proper hygiene and wearing the proper shoe while exercising.

Stress Relief Via Aromatherapy

Whether you’ve had a bad day at the office or had a stressful day at home, there is nothing like stress relief via aromatherapy. What is so distinctive about aromatherapy is the aroma part. That is, the use of oils which provide mental, spiritual, and physical healing. The aroma, which is experienced by using various scented oils, invokes emotions and it is the brain, therefore, where all emotions are controlled. Thus, when trying to overcome stress, the therapy is provided by the aroma.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways: scented candles, baths, fragrances, showers, or even a wood-burning fire. It is the essence of the aroma that reduces stress and provides a calm, soothing, and relaxing state.

Lavender is one of the most popular oils used in aromatherapy. Whether used in baths or scented candles, it is touted as being the most important part of any aromatherapy ritual.

While lavender is known to alleviate stress, lemon oil is another healing substance which has similar properties for use in stress reduction. According to studies, it clears the head, improves concentration and memory, and combats depression. It is probably the most refreshing of oils used today.

Another well-known oil which has become beneficial to one’s health is chamomile. In the form of tea, it not only calms and relaxes, but offers stress relief as well. This herbal medicine is primarily used to alleviate anger and anxiety.

Interestingly enough, aromatherapy has been around since ancient times. It was used mainly by the Egyptians, who recognized the physical and spiritual properties of scented oils. Cleopatra would take milk baths strewn with rose petals, and the aroma would contribute to her physical wellbeing. In fact, Egyptians used scented oils in the mummification process.

Aromatherapy has been used to prevent disease, help in weight loss, and treat depression, but primarily is used for stress relief today. Everywhere you look, you can find aromatherapy products. The next time you feel anxious or stressed out, take a soothing bath using your favorite bath oil, and light some scented candles. In no time you will become relaxed, calm, and probably get a little shut eye as well.

Signs of Depression in Older Individuals

Depression is often misunderstood for having a bad day. We’ve all had moments when we felt a bit down in the dumps. However, when the mood continues for an indeterminate amount of time, it is more than just a bad day – it is depression. Here are signs of depression in older individuals which should be dealt with as soon as possible.

There was a recent study not so long ago that revealed lack of light, especially in the winter months, can cause depression. In fact, studies suggested that light therapy would significantly decrease depression in older adults. However, there are other signs of depression more pronounced and for which you should be aware.

1. Loss of a spouse can leave an older individual feeling lonely, especially if they were totally dependent or have been married for a long time leaving them isolated for the first time in many years.
2. Medications can contribute to depression, especially heart or anti-anxiety drugs.
3. Illness can sink an older individual into a depression in which they feel there is no hope of recovery.
4. Anxiety can lead to depression, especially if the anxiety leads to panic attacks which may render the individual helpless and afraid all the time.
5. Loss of appetite is a sign of depression. The underlying cause should be investigated.
6. Sleep pattern changes, especially if an older individual is sleeping more often, specifically during daytime hours. This may be a clear sign of depression.
7. Continual sadness in which the individual finds nothing to be happy about.
8. Avoiding friends and social situations is a clear sign something is wrong.
9. Lack of self esteem often leads to depression. Feeling unworthy and/or unloved.
10. A family history of depression is another contributory factor.
11. A tendency to reveal physical discomfort frequently, although this may be a simple need for attention.
12. A lack of energy or the inability to carry out the most minimal of tasks.
13. The lack of hygiene or not caring if one is dressed for the day.
14. Discussions of past problems occupying the individual’s mind all the time.
15. The inability to enjoy life.
16. Thoughts of suicide.

Signs of depression in older individuals can be mistaken for many things. However, the bottom line is they can and do become depressed and there can be a myriad of reasons. For those who show signs of dementia, this can be an added strain not only for the older individual’s family, but on the individual as well. Suddenly, they are no longer in control and it frightens them. Depression is the byproduct.

Noticing these signs of depression in older individuals is the first step in the intervention process to alleviate their fears and help them to cope with whatever situation is causing the problem.

Probiotics Explained

What are probiotics? The Food and Agricultural Organization defines probiotics as “live microorganisms administered in adequate amounts which confer a beneficial health effect on the host.” Probiotics explained are simply bacteria found in dairy such as yogurt. The use of this type of bacteria improves lactose digestion in people who lack it and has positive effects on the immune system as well.

For example, suppose you develop a yeast infection. Most people would agree that consuming yogurt would alleviate the symptoms. This is because of the probiotics contained in yogurt. A yeast infection is caused by different organisms. Lactobacilli is present in a healthy vagina. Conversely, lack of it causes yeast infections. Therefore, consuming yogurt decreases the incidence of yeast infections and lactobacilli controls the duration and incidence as well.

Moreover, studies have shown that three or more servings of dairy products a day have lowered levels of obesity. Thus, dairy products combined with probiotic bacteria can improve health.

Other conditions in which probiotics play a major role are: diarrhea, chronic use of antibiotics, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, lactose intolerance, hypertension, cancer, high cholesterol, and certain allergies. What effect does probiotics have in common with all of these conditions?

Probiotics alleviate diarrhea and has been an effective treatment, especially in children. While antibiotics are used to kill bacteria, it is also true that they can kill off good bacteria as well. Probiotics replace the good bacteria that are lost. As it relates to irritable bowl syndrome, probiotics has been known to provide some symptom relief from diarrhea and bloating. Inflammatory bowel disease when treated with high levels of probiotics has shown to increase the period in which a person is free from this disease.

For those who cannot tolerate lactose, studies have concluded that consuming yogurt and unfermented dairy products aided in the digestion of lactose. So too, probiotics have been shown to reduce the systolic pressure in those suffering from hypertension.

Cancer causing agents such as chemicals can reside in the gastrointestinal tract. The use of probiotics has shown to decrease one’s exposure to cancer risks. Moreover, probiotic cultures in the form of fermented milk reduced bladder cancer. Studies to determine the effects of probiotics in dairy foods have shown a reduction in cases of high cholesterol. However, research is still ongoing.

Finally, a recent study reported that there was a 50% drop in incidence of atopic eczema in children who were receiving a probiotic supplement. Moreover, it was concluded that exposure to specific microbes early in a child’s life may also decrease allergies as well.

Probiotics and its utilization can help to treat acute intestinal infections, aid in the digestion of lactose, improve health, and possibly reduced risk of disease. Studies are ongoing to determine the benefits of probiotics. However, so far there seems to be positive results.

Natural Remedies for Ear Infections

Infections of the ear most often occur after swimming, specifically when polluted water enters the ear canal. Also scratching inside the ear to alleviate itching or trying to remove ear wax are other ways in which you can develop an ear infection. If the onset of the symptoms begins with itching followed by pain, these are signs the ear may be infected. Here are some natural remedies for ear infections which may help.

Apply a heating pad over the ear or a clean cotton pad. Keep the ear clean and dry, and remove any pus with a cotton ball. When taking a shower, wear a shower cap to prevent any water from entering the ear. Remove any water from the ear with a blow dryer.

Other natural remedies include:

1. Add a few drops of garlic juice into the ear.
2. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to a ¼ cup of warm olive oil.
3. Add a few drops of warm olive oil into the infected ear.
4. Add a drop of hydrogen peroxide in the ear.
5. Heat up some baby oil and place a few drops in the ear.
6. For wax buildup which results in an infection, place a few drops of mineral oil into the infected ear and remove the loosened wax with a suction bulb.

While these are tried and true natural remedies for ear infections, you can prevent them from occurring by using a remedy that has worked for generations – take a teaspoon of cod liver oil every day. According to research, this old but familiar remedy has been proven effective. Experts suggest taking a teaspoon of the new lemon-flavored cod liver oil followed by a multi-vitamin tablet with selenium. They assert this may also prevent ear infections in children.

Of course, if the ear infection persists after you’ve applied these natural remedies, it would be advisable to see a doctor. However, the general consensus among those who have used these natural remedies for ear infections agree that any one of the above methods do indeed work.

Licorice Root and Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux is a disease caused when stomach acid enters the esophagus resulting in heart burn. While there are many over-the-counter medications used to decrease the affects of acid reflux, licorice root is believed to be the herb of choice to alleviate the discomfort caused by stomach acid.

Licorice root is available in the following forms: capsules, tablets, and liquid. While many have touted the use of licorice root to relieve acid reflux, there are those who should not use this as a form of treatment.

If you have high blood pressure, avoid licorice root as it will significantly raise blood pressure. If taken in large doses, licorice affects the body’s hormone levels. Pregnant women should not take licorice as it could increase the risk of premature labor.

In addition to high blood pressure, licorice root can increase salt and water retention, and lower your potassium level, which can ultimately lead to heart problems. It is also advised not to take licorice root in conjunction with water pills as this, too, decreases one’s potassium to dangerous levels.

While licorice root has been used traditionally in Chinese medicine as a dietary supplement for stomach ulcers, bronchitis, and infections such as hepatitis, it is clear
the derivative of licorice root is preferable.

Known as deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), it does not have the same side effects as its counterpart, glycyrrhiza glabra, which is the licorice itself. In fact, the root of the licorice plant contains flavonoids which are known to stop acid secretions. Studies have confirmed that DGL is more effective than over-the-counter or prescription drugs in relieving acid reflux.

If you have persistent acid reflux, check with your doctor to determine if licorice root will be beneficial in alleviating the symptoms. Ask your doctor what dosage would be best for you and in what form you should take the licorice root. If the acid reflux continues, you may need to have tests done to determine how serious the condition is or may become. Moreover, if you do have high blood pressure, ask your doctor to provide you with the best form of treatment for this disease.

Health Benefits of Blueberries

The old adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” may be true, but studies now confirm that blueberries have far more beneficial effects than apples. What are the health benefits of blueberries? Let’s take a look.

Have you become forgetful? You know, misplaced the car keys or can’t remember someone’s name. Well the good news is that blueberries, consumed on a daily basis in a bowl of cereal, for example, can improve memory.

Blueberries ranked the highest in antioxidant properties, and have been proven to aid in the anti-aging process. Moreover, blueberries are known to restrict the harmful effects that free radicals can cause. Not all free radicals are considered harmful. But some can cause damage to our cells, as well as cause various types of cancer. The older we become, the more difficult it is to safeguard against these free radicals. By consuming blueberries, we have a better chance of minimizing the damage.

Blueberries have also shown to lower cholesterol, which is a major problem among many people today. Research has proven that a specific component in blueberries reduces the chances of urinary tract infections by preventing bacteria from lining the walls of the urinary tract.

Blueberries have effective anti-inflammatory, anti-blood clotting, and antibacterial effects. In fact, they have been used in cases of diarrhea and food poisoning.

Studies have also shown that blueberries can improve eyesight, and are thought to help in reducing eye fatigue.

Researchers feel there is a great chance that blueberries can help in the fight against obesity and heart disease. But the most exciting news is that it may be linked in the fight against cancer.

A half cup of blueberries a day can make all the difference in fighting off potential health problems. The next time you go to your supermarket, pick up a pound of fresh blueberries or a bag frozen blueberries. You will see remarkable results after a few weeks.

Dandelions Are More Than Just A Weed

Believe it or not, dandelions are more than just a weed. Studies have shown that dandelions act as a tonic to purify the blood, improve gastrointestinal health, and its juice can be used to treat colds and congestion, as well.

Dandelions are not just weeds growing wildly in your garden. They are a rich source of Beta-carotene and vitamin A, fiber, potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, thiamine, riboflavin, and protein.

Some of the benefits of dandelions are: aids in weight loss, cleanses the skin, improves bowel function, prevents anemia, control diabetes, lowers cholesterol, reduces acid indigestion, and can prevent certain forms of cancer.

In addition, there are studies which indicate that the dandelion has cured certain types of melanoma. In fact, one patient who had a malignant melanoma reportedly ate dandelion salad every day and after a dozen years or so there has been no recurring melanoma.

One of the most beneficial uses for dandelion is in the treatment of high blood pressure. Moreover, dandelion acts as a diuretic and its potassium aids in maintaining a healthy heart. Used for cramps and muscle spasms, dandelions have been used for centuries. In fact, the root of the dandelion is said to cleanse the liver.

If you need a mild laxative, the dandelion will prove beneficial in this regard. It will also improve your appetite, relieve constipation, and aid in indigestion.

Dandelions are healthy and not harmful in any way. It is reported that everyone can benefit from eating dandelions on a regular basis or drinking its juices, as well.

The next time you tend to your garden, save those dandelions that are growing wildly and use them to make a healthy juice, or for use in any of the treatments described herein. Mother Nature has a way of providing us with plants and flowers used for oils and teas. Consider, then, that dandelions are more than just a weed. They are beneficial to our health in more ways than we can imagine.

Curcumin as an Aid in Prostate Cancer Treatment

While you may have used turmeric as a spice in your cooking, it is actually ground from the root of a plant Curcuma longa L, of the ginger family. Thus, curcumin as an aid in prostate cancer treatment has become the source of studies and lively discussion in the scientific world.

It is well-known that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. While the exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown, studies suggest that diet is a risk factor in the development of prostate cancer, specifically, a high fat diet.

Curcumin has been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and has the ability to rid the body of free radicals. Research has shown that curcumin “inhibited the induction of cancers of skin, fore stomach, duodenum, tongue, colon, and mammary glands in mice and rats.” Curcumin has also been effective against human prostate cancer in mice, as well.

The results of these studies indicate that curcumin could potentially increase the anti-tumor activity in humans. It has been shown to decrease cell proliferation and has been touted as a potential anti-cancer agent due to the fact it has significantly inhibited prostate cancer growth. Moreover, it also has the potential to prevent the progression of this type of cancer.

While research is still on-going, the news is good. Scientists have tested curcumin in combination with PEITC, which is a substance found in certain vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts, and other leafy green vegetables. Studies with mice indicated that injecting them with this combination significantly reduced tumor growth.

Due to the results of these studies, many patients with prostate cancer are now combining conventional therapies with curcumin and PEITC. Studies are continuing in an effort to prevent and treat prostate cancer.

Could Your Headache Be A Migraine?

Could your headache be a migraine? Do you have headaches which seem to linger on and on no matter what type of over-the-counter medication you take? Is the pain located on one side of your head? Do you become sensitive to light and sound? Do you feel sick from it? If you answer yes to any of these questions, it is most likely the case that it’s not a headache at all, but a terrible migraine.

It is estimated that more than 29 million Americans suffer from migraines, and unfortunately women are affected more than men. What complicates this further is that most migraines are attributed to sinus infections or tension headaches.

Migraines are typically caused by stress, skipping a meal, lack of sleep, medications, sunlight, TV, certain foods, or loud constant noise. The pain is caused when brain cells set off a specific nerve which releases chemicals that cause swelling of the blood vessels on the surface of the brain. The result is a pain felt around the eye or temple area.

Not easily diagnosed, routine CT scans may be performed to determine if there are any other underlying causes. This is certainly no comfort to those who experience migraines. While there are many reasons why someone would develop migraines, it is suggested by doctors that a diary is kept to determine the frequency of the migraines and what event played a role in its onset.

Accordingly, the FDA has approved three over-the-counter medications to treat migraines. Whether or not they are effective, only the individual experiencing the pain can determine. However, it should be noted that some of these medications can cause side effects. Moreover, more potent medications have also been approved by the FDA to control the incidents of migraines. However, these also may have adverse effects.

Another type of therapy, one that has been used as an alternative to drugs, is biofeedback. Using a specific type of equipment which monitors physical tension, a migraine patient has the ability to control the catalyst which contributes to the stress. After a certain amount of time, the patient can then use this technique without equipment to either stop the attack or minimize its effects.

Migraines are and can be debilitating. Whether you choose drug therapy or biofeedback therapy, it is up to you to decide which treatment is most effective and carries with it less risk in developing side effects.

Choosing the Right Wallking Shoe

Take an inventory of your shoes and determine how many pairs are most comfortable for walking. How many did you choose? One? Two? Choosing the right walking shoe is essential in preventing foot injuries and other problems.

Sure, buying a pair of the latest styles might be fashionable, but can you honestly wear them all day without grimacing in pain? Years ago, a good pair of walking shoes consisted of one style which was not at all flattering. Today, however, you have a wide variety of good walking shoes to choose from, and it is in your best interest to keep your feet healthy by selecting the appropriate walking shoe.

Some of the types of shoes which you can choose are those that are shaped like your feet and provide more toe room. With tight shoes, you run the risk of bunions, blisters, calluses, and a host of other conditions which can make your life miserable.

According to leading podiatrists, shoes should be comfortable. You should be able to wiggle your toes, and the shoes should have a sole that flexes at the ball of your foot.
Also, it is important to wear the proper size. More often than not, if there is a pair of shoes we have to have, but are a bit smaller, we make the sacrifice. The end result, however, is more pain.

Have your feet sized when you go to the shoe store. As you get older, changes occur to the feet in that their size and shape become more pronounced.

The next time you are sitting at your desk or at home, and you suddenly find you’ve taken off your shoes because they are causing pain, this may be a good time to visit a good shoe store. They will not only measure your feet, but provide you with a variety of shoes more comfortable for wearing.

Could You Be Suffering from Candida and Not Even Know It?

*Note: This article is about a women's health issue and includes sensitive information.

Because Candida is normally present in a healthy person, you could be suffering from Candida and not even know it. While it commonly presents itself in the vagina resulting in a yeast infection, Candida can surface in the areas where the skin is moist, as well as in the mouth, also known as thrush.

Specific to yeast infections, however, you may develop a yeast infection if symptoms such as itching or irritation of the vagina is present. You may also notice a thick white discharge or have pain and soreness during intercourse.

The cause of Candida is the overgrowth of a fungus called Candida albicans, which oddly enough is normally present in the vagina. However, when conditions change and become more inviting for the fungus to grow excessively, it replaces the good bacteria and Candida develops.

While yeast infections are common, the best way to prevent the infection is to follow these rules: wear cotton underpants, do not use deodorants or feminine hygiene sprays, avoid powders and deodorant tampons, and, above all, do not douche. It is a common misconception that douching will alleviate the infection. In fact, what it does is take away the normal bacteria, which is present in the vagina as a protection against infection.

If you develop Candida and need help in diagnosing and treating the infection, you may want to talk to several doctors. The reason being is that because there have been no definitive studies to ascertain the cause and cure of Candida, many women have found it difficult to find a doctor who is willing to treat them. Or they have encountered doctors who could not or would not accept the fact this is a serious infection, one which could develop into a more serious problem.

Doctors who are aware of Candida and its effects have offered this advice to women, “Get somebody to take you seriously.” Others have agreed that doctors need to reassess their attitude towards Candida and understand the seriousness of the infection, especially if it spreads to the bowel or throughout the body.

If you are not satisfied with your doctor, find another. If he or she is non-sympathetic to your needs, then keep searching until you find a doctor who is willing to properly diagnose and treat the infection and take every precaution to ensure it has not spread.

Can Green Vegetables Really Help Prevent Skin Cancer?

According to researchers who studied over 1,000 adults over an 11-year period, it was determined that increasing their intake of green leafy vegetables decreased the incidence of skin cancer, specifically squamous cell carcinoma, by 41 percent. Can green vegetables really help prevent skin cancer? As the above study indicates, the answer is yes.

Vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collard greens could decrease skin cancer. Moreover, these vegetables contain a variety of vitamins and minerals such as: vitamins C and E, flavonoids, folic acid (especially high in leafy green vegetables), and lutein, all of which have been effective in the prevention of skin cancer.

Greens that belong to the cabbage family have also been known to help prevent cancer. These greens are also antioxidants which prevent dangerous substances from entering the body.

In another study, people who previously had skin cancer had a 55 percent decrease in squamous cell carcinoma with increased intakes of green leafy vegetables.

Along with green vegetables, fruits also play a vital role in reducing tumors in the body. One of the fruits which is currently being studied is pomegranate fruit extract. The antioxidant component is higher in pomegranate than in red wine and green tea. Researchers further claim that pomegranate extract possesses anti-skin tumor promoting effects.

A similar study found that tannic acid and ellagic acid, which are polyphenols found in dark red and purple fruits such as pomegranates, as well as raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries, may slow skin's aging process. Various other studies have shown that pomegranates possess skin cancer prevention capabilities and can reduce the damage done by the sun's UVB rays.

In addition, grapes contain a chemical known as resveratrol, which is also an antioxidant and may prevent cell damage before it begins. In fact, red and purple grapes are the richest sources of resveratrol.

Tomatoes have the anti-cancer compound known as lycopene. Studies have shown that lycopene prevents prostate cancer. In addition, lycopene also has been evaluated as an effective component in the protection against breast, lung, stomach, and pancreatic cancer.

Avoid Dehydration This Summer

One of the problems some people face during the hot summer months is dehydration. Because this can lead to more severe problems, such as heat exhaustion, here are some ways in which you can avoid dehydration this summer.

During the summer months, especially when at the beach, shopping, or exercising, it is important to always have bottles of water and salty snacks on hand. Any form of exercise can result in loss of salt and water due to sweating. If the water is not replaced, you can easily become disoriented, nauseous, and feel faint. Another sign of dehydration is if your urine is dark.

On hot days, it is especially helpful to drink at least ten glasses of water a day to keep hydrated. This holds true if you are indoors, as well. You may be cleaning the house or working in your garden in the heat and not realize you are losing fluids. Take a break and drink a couple of glasses of water. Run a wash cloth under cold water and place it behind your neck. This will help to cool your body, as well.

If you find you are dehydrated, experts say it is important that you not gulp down any fluids. This can cause vomiting. Sip a glass of water slowly to avoid any further discomfort. If you are outdoors, find a shady area and rest until the queasy feeling goes away. In fact, place a cold wash cloth in a plastic zip lock bag and keep it in your purse or tote bag, just in case.

In addition, you need potassium in your system. During the summer, have a banana a day, as well as snacks or foods which contain salt. You may also need to maintain your electrolytes, and there are many over-the-counter energy drinks available which serve this purpose. Carry water or energy drinks with you, as well as snacks, if you plan on being outdoors on a very hot day, whether at the beach, your backyard pool, or even at the mall.

Avoid dehydration this summer by paying close attention to what signals your body is giving off. Dehydration can affect anyone, especially children and older adults. On very hot days, check your elderly neighbors to ensure they are okay. They are especially vulnerable during the summer months.

5 Reasons Sunless Tanning is Better

It is well-known that over-exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause skin cancer. It is also a known fact that tanning beds emit more UV rays than the sun, and are more likely to cause skin cancer, as well. In order to avoid developing skin cancer via sunbathing or tanning beds, here are five reasons sunless tanning is better for you.

1. According to the American Cancer Society, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime. Ultraviolet rays and tanning beds can all cause skin cancer. In fact, they estimate that five or more sunburns more than doubles your risk of developing skin cancer.

2. According to the Academy of Dermatology, the sun’s rays are more damaging today than in recent years. One doctor related that most people associate bronzed skin with good health. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

3. Sunless tanning can be done in the privacy of your own home. It is important to test the product first. The last thing you want to do is to reveal an “orange” tan. Apply the sunless tanning lotion you’re going to use to a small area on your skin and wait 24 hours to see how it works.

4. Sunless tanners are perfectly safe. Before applying the tanner, use exfoliates to remove dead skin. Experts say it will remove any scaly patches and make the application of the tanning lotion more effective.

5. Sunless tanning can be accomplished over a period of time, no matter what time of year. Don’t go full out for the bronzed look, but a little over time will give you the desired results.

Sunless tanning lotions are in. Whether lotions, gels, foams, creams, sprays, or the many varieties available today, there is no need to risk getting skin cancer anymore.

5 Natural Remedies for IBS

Five Natural Remedies for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome encompasses many symptoms associated with the gastrointestinal tract and which cause pain and discomfort when attempting bowel movement. Moreover, abdominal pain, or alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea may accompany this syndrome. Here are 5 natural remedies for IBS.

1. Avoid emotional stress and pressures.
2. A high-fiber diet can alleviate the symptoms.
3. Keep a diary of what you eat and drink to determine the cause.
4. Peppermint capsules can reduce the pain and bloating.
5. Probiotics have been shown to reduce not only abdominal pain and bloating, but allow for easy bowel movement as well.

Because the symptoms of IBS are often brought on by tension and strain in your lifestyle as well as a poor diet, it is recommended that your diet consist of low-fat, high-fiber meals. Adding plenty of greens and fruits, including spinach, whole-grain products, and drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day can also alleviate the problem. Also, prune juice may be recommended as a stimulant to improve bowel movement. Smoking should be avoided as it often intensifies the symptoms.

A daily diary noting the foods you eat may reveal the source of the problem. Perhaps fried foods are the cause, or you are not consuming enough vegetables or fruits. A diary can be quite helpful in ascertaining why your bowel movements are not only irregular, but painful as well.

Peppermint is known to reduce the abdominal pain and bloating of irritable bowel syndrome due to the fact that it blocks the movement of calcium into muscle cells in the intestines, and eases muscle contractions. It is also helpful in eliminating excess gas in the intestines.

Probiotics, which are primarily found in dairy products such as yogurt and fermented foods, offer a natural remedy for IBS. In a recent study of women with IBS, probiotics were found to be more effective in reducing abdominal pain, bloating, bowel dysfunction, incomplete evacuation, straining, and gas. Probiotics are probably the best known microorganisms one can utilize to effectively act as one of the natural remedies for IBS.

Skin Cancer

There are several forms of skin cancer: Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and the worst form of skin cancer known as Malignant Melanoma. Let’s discuss what to look for, symptoms, and when you should contact your doctor.

Basal Cell Carcinoma: This is a common form of skin cancer usually caused by over-exposure to the sun. This type of skin cancer grows slowly, rarely spreads, and is seldom life-threatening. While it may vary in appearance, it is usually characterized by a small, flat module which gradually may turn into an open sore with raised edges. It appears frequently on the face, usually around the eyes, near the nose or on the nose, as well as on other sun-exposed areas including the back, chest, arms, and legs. For proper diagnosis and treatment of Basal Cell Carcinoma, see your doctor.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma: This is also a common form of skin cancer which is rarely life-threatening. It starts as a small, firm, painless lump or patch, and resembles a wart or an open sore. It is also associated with over-exposure to the sun and can occur anywhere on the body. It is most common on the back of the hands or on the lips. If you have a lump on your skin that does not heal within three weeks, check with your doctor.

Malignant Melanoma: This is the most deadly form of skin cancer. It is sometimes associated with exposure to the sun, but can occur anywhere on the body including parts of the body not exposed to the sun. It most often appears on the face, upper chest or legs, and usually grows from existing moles. Malignant moles may bleed and can resemble sores that do not heal. If you think you have a melanoma, contact your doctor immediately.

Identifying skin cancers can be difficult. However, there are ways in which you can determine if you have any of the above three skin cancers.

Cancerous moles are often asymmetrical, that is, one half of the mole looks different from the other half. The outline of a cancerous mole can be uneven or have poor defined edges and may change over time. Melanomas can be very dark in color and contain shades of tan, brown, white, red, or blue. Moles that grow larger than a half inch across may be a sign of malignant melanomas, although smaller moles can also indicate malignancy as well.

Natural Sunburn Relief

While there are many topical creams and anti-inflammatory medications you can use to alleviate the pain and soreness associated with sunburn, there are natural sunburn relief products which can relieve the discomfort as well.

Aloe Vera, which is used in the treatment of burn victims, is quite effective in the treatment of sunburn. Simply apply a thin layer to the affected area and repeat the application every hour.

Herbal teas can offer a respite from the discomfort of sunburn as well. Non-herbal black tea is one of them. Steep six bags in four cups of hot water, cool, and apply it to the affected area with a cotton cloth. In fact, tea bags have long been known to alleviate puffiness and burns to the eyes as well. Place a cooled teabag on each closed eyelid, lie down, and let the tea do its work.

Try an herbal bath using either chamomile or lavender essential oils. This is another effective means by which you can relieve severe sunburn symptoms. You may want to try tea tree oil, which helps heal skin burns and other skin irritations, and products rich with it can be helpful as well.

Another way to relieve the pain of sunburn is to apply cold compresses by using cool tap water on a cotton towel and apply it to the affected areas. Also, a cool bath is also recommended. Do not shower as the pulsating water on your sunburned skin will cause further pain.

An oatmeal bath will not only relieve the itchiness accompanying dried sunburned skin, but sooth and alleviate the burn as well. There is powdered oatmeal available with which you can add to a tub of cool bathwater.

While some people look forward to getting a great summer tan, bathing in the sun too long can have caustic affects. Use SPF 15 or higher sun block, depending on your skin tone, to prevent severe burning. Apply it before you go out into the sun and every 20 minutes thereafter.

The rule of thumb when sunbathing is: 20 minutes in the sun and 20 minutes out of the sun. In this way, you can acquire a tan comfortably and safely.
